How Uttarayan cold storage reduced electricity bills by switching to solar?

Businesses all over the world are rapidly choosing green energy with good reason! Vikram Solar has always been at the forefront of supporting businesses and their green energy endeavours.

This leaping green energy adoption trajectory indicates something more than just positive PR and wanting to reduce carbon footprint. The reason is simple. When a company chooses to go solar, it is actually incorporating a triple bottom line strategy, which is expected to offer greater business value through better performance in financial, social, and environmental (or ecological) frameworks. In short, it is about maximizing returns by offering better solutions to people and the planet.

The strategy must be working, as the world’s leading companies like- Apple (398.3 MW), Amazon (369 MW), Walmart (331 MW) etc are ramping up their solar capacities year after year. In 2019, more than 1.2 GW of solar installations were in the commercial solar industry. Backed by the Government of India’s continuous efforts to promote green energy, companies in India are also showing an interest in solar adoption. Several Indian like– United Breweries, Century Ply, Keventers Agro, Infosys, Tata Motors, Hatsun Agro, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), Airtel etc – already have or are in the process of adopting solar power.

In 2016, Uttarayaan Cold Storage Private Limited approached us for a sustainable energy solution that can power their business. We studied their electricity bills and observed a billing of around 80 Lakhs. Understanding that increasing electricity bills were one of the only two major expenditures of Uttarayaan Cold Storage Private Limited, we at Vikram Solar focused towards offering a solution that will save money in the long run. After a thorough analysis, we proposed switching to solar which could result in savings of 20-22 lakhs INR every year in electricity bills in the long run.

Our Channel partner Medas Automation, Kolkata shouldered the project and commissioned the plant with precision and safety, while upholding client’s demands.

Technical specifications:

We supplied high efficiency 648 numbers of 330 Wp Eldora Grand modules and 4 numbers of 50 KWp string inverters for installation of 200 KWp capacity solar plant for Uttarayaan Cold Storage Private Limited, at Dhupguri, nearly 30 KM from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. The plant became operational in March 2019 and highest energy yield recorded from the plant is 1246 KWh on May 2019.

The plant produced 3 L unit (KWH) power within 15 months. The plant saved nearly 40 lakhs on their electricity bills in the last financial year and looking forward to continued savings while powering their operational needs through sustainable energy.

There were less than 20 solar powered cold storages in 2016 but now there are more than 35,000 units in India. This testifies the importance and the need for sustainable energy to reduce electricity bills. With Government of India extending 30% subsidy benefit to solar powered cold storages, now opting for solar has become easier than ever
