Wind and Snow

Wind and snow subject modules to dynamic mechanical loads, or forces applied in different directions and speeds. The modules can be subjected to adverse situations during transportation, delivery, and installation of modules, especially if they are packaged or handled improperly. This test demonstrates if module components and material combinations are likely to break down in these conditions or withstand the pressure to a certain limit.

High temperature & High Humidity

The Humidity Freeze test is an environmental test that is designed to measure the ability of a module to withstand extreme temperatures, high and low as well as humidity. Once the test is conducted, the module is rested for 2-4 hours and then visually inspected. A Damp Heat environmental test is also conducted to assess whether a module can withstand a long period of exposure to humidity. A temperature of 85°C ± 2°C is applied for a period of 1000 hours along with a relative humidity of 85% ± 5%.

Modules are subjected to a Hail impact test to determine their ability to withstand severe hail storm & rain at very low temperatures. Vikram Solar modules also have waterproof junction boxes that offer protection up to IP68 rating in varying climatic conditions.

The Wet Leakage current test measures electrical safety. This test determines a module's insulation against penetration of moisture under damp and wet conditions such as rain, melting snow and fog. This is to avoid problems such as corrosion and ground faults and protect against electrical shocks.

Payload

The Payload test is used to measure mechanical load. This test investigates how a module can withstand conditions such as wind, snow, static or ice loads. A vital part of this test relates to weather a module is mounted as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Another thing that is considered is consistency of the applied load on the surface of the solar module. The sturdiness of the module and its components is tested with a stress test that simulates the normal assembly process and through different cycles and tensile strength levels.

Low degradation

PID test is Potential Induced Degradation, which can happen soon after a module is commissioned. This condition appeared only in the last decade since the inception of the installation of systems with higher voltages(1000V/1500V). PID can negatively impact module performance by over 30%. Some degradation is reversible, but others are not.

The module is placed in an environmental chamber, with a voltage bias equal to the highest system voltage rating of the module (-1000 V or -1500 V) applied. This is done at a temperature of 85°C and a humidity of 85% for two cycles, every 96 hours. These conditions allow PVEL to measure possible degradation related to increased leakage currents.
